Journey into a realm of alluring and colourful electronica, in which sounds take on emotive peculiarities, are dressed with ethereal vocals and are strung together in cinematic bonds. Berlin-based producer Hannes Smith delivers a visceral body of fantastical, and poignant string-lead, deep techno, that drives and pulls with its ardent resonance and progressive, classical awareness. Recorded in Berlin’s legendary Funkhaus Studio, 33 EP is just another step in the producer’s long list of well-received releases.
Embodied in the acute electronic sounds that have come to define the city’s nightlife, ’Karlowka’ rolls with driving hats, and absorbing vocal lines, broken-up with climatic strings and theatrical flare. Leaning in the style of DJ Koze, or earlier Apparat, ’Karlowka’ is both equally epic and minimalistic, in that it draws you in during each moment, yet is expertly-produced to such an extent, it doesn’t over-demand: It just pulses, washing over you with each beat, notation, and melody.
‘Take this, it might help you’ is a more purpose-driven, club-focused record that is still rich with the producer’s cinematic aesthetic. It reflects the more classic sound of the city’s more atmospheric producers, yet with a rich, interspersed tapestry of original drum loops, and distinctive piano line that wraps its way into your body and soul, leaving it fully enriched. It is the very definition of Hannes Smith's ethos, to create alternative electronica. Yet, with this release, he has come to create an electronic that is also soulfully catchy, deep and irresistible.
